An Alarippu is a traditional Bharatanatyam dance, based solely on rhythm that brings out the special charm of pure dance. It is an invocation piece, symbolizing the offering of respect to both God and the audience. The movements in an Alarippu relax the dancer's body, loosen the mind, help coordinate the limbs, and prepare her to perform the entire margam or performance. The dancer invokes the blessings of Lord Ganesha, Remover of all obstacles, Goddess Saraswathi, who is Goddess of Knowledge, education, and performing arts and lastly, Guru who guides and enlightens with right understanding.
